Have I mentioned that Flocations is a great app?

Earlier this year, I worked with Flocations to present it's first user interface and layout. It had to be simple and effective, and spacious with a map. Flocations allows a user to find out the cheapest flights from a single location on a certain day. It's my first time putting together a UI for a web utility, and I'm delighted with how things worked out. The team gave me lots of great input, and the user feedback has been the best teacher. There still is much room for improvement, and if you would be so kind, do send us some feedback on your experience using Flocations.

At the end of last year, Stick and Balloon worked with Propellerfish, illustrating slides for their client Audi. This led on to another project with Audi, I went with Propellerfish founder Alex Marquez and his team to Chang Chun, China as an onsite illustrator and surprisingly, facilitator!

What an experience it was, to attempt to tease thoughtful ideas from Audi's top management in Mandarin!

Here's a selected few illustrations I did for them, the rest will be released on a later date, when things are not so secretive anymore. :)

Stick and Balloon went to FMX

In May 2011, Stick and Balloon (myself and Sara) gravitated towards the same point and exploded into a mass of colour and crazy horses. We took part in the Crazy Horse 48 Hours Animation Jam against 4 other teams from Egypt, UK, Georgia and Poland. All teams had to create a 30 second to 2 minute animation using ITFS mascot Trixi horse.

Stick and Balloon decided on using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After effects, Adobe Premiere and crayons to create our little piece. We were fed messages and love from many people, especially from my special someone who came with delicious presents every day. Even though we didn't win, we're very proud of our work and would love to share it with everyone.

JimmyFish The Game!

Over January and February, I was working two shifts. In the day, I was hacking away at materials to create the sets for "The Gruffalo's Child" at Studio Soi; while at night, I was scratching away on paper to create the characters, design and game play for my first epic flash game. My boy spent most of his evenings supporting me quietly while my busyness happen, I feel bad for having neglected him! Thank you for being there dear one.

What's Jimmyfish all about?

The environment has been pretty horrible recently and it's been raining fish outside. Jimmy is going for a party, and he regrets letting his mum buy him his costume - a fish. His mom thought it might be funny and thought its appropriate considering the weather around them.

Now, the only way Jimmy can get out of the costume is to find as many ways he can to save energy and resources in his house, and for each new way he finds, he earns one eco dollar. The more eco dollars he saves, a better costume he can get. And he saves the environment too!

The game is a collaboration with Build and Connect, Jachin Pousson, Nexus Singapore and created, designed and animated by our good old Stick and Balloon. We really hope you enjoy it!

The Little Dreamer got on Culture Push!

Oh Jolly Joy! The Little Dreamer Novel with it's illustrations and animations got onto Culture Push! Here is the article to share.

The Little Dreamer is a charming fairy tale reminiscent of The Little Prince meets The Arabian Nights, written by Anila Angin, and illustrated and animated by Stick & Balloon‘s Sara Chong and Yanyun Chen.

Anila believes herself to be some specimen of alien on a visit to Earth. She also likes to imagine that she might be a slightly more grownup version of Zayoni, the child whose life is recorded in The Little Dreamer. Her goal is to help people remember who they really are, and thus find themselves again, somewhere in the milky cosmos of the heart …

“A child, Zayoni, leaves her tribe, her mother and her beloved tree to go in search of the lost City of Dreams, hoping to restore a paradisiacal way of life to her island. Along the way, she meets a host of strange and colourful characters, including a fortune-teller, a talking dog, a wicked princess, and the Old Dreamers of the Earth, Air, Sea and Fire – beings so ancient, they grow younger with age. The child has only three months to find the City of Dreams. She races against time and the challenges she encounters, only to realise that what she was looking for was within her all this while, and in the hearts of everyone else …”

Anila also has a rad blog where she posts new fables and flash fiction, accompanied by original illustrations from a loose collective of local artists. In the middle of an island that sits in the middle of an ocean, there is an Enchanted Lake.

Not the kind of dead and dust-crumbled city that archeologists are so fond of either, but a thriving, very much alive underground city.

It is the City of Dreams, and its inhabitants are thought to be a beautiful and magical race of immortals known as the Dreamers. No one who lives on the surface of the island has ever seen the City of Dreams.

Not since it disappeared underground.

The child, Zayoni, does not know any of this, until a mysterious woman appears to her in the jungle one day and sets her heart dreaming about the lost city. In 2010, I lived in Saint Cloud, France for a month, Bristol, UK for a month, travelled to Denmark for a week, Beijing, China for 5 days, Changchun, China for 4 days. That's a whole lot of commas in one sentence.

In 2011, I'm leaving for Ludwigsburg, Germany to intern at Studio Soi for some months, and then floating on the molecules of wanderlust.

Two and a half years have passed since the start of this journey, and Stick and Balloon are finally at the end of our road. Our experiment with combining stop-motion and traditional animation techniques began two years ago as a huge challenge, as we discovered there were few animations carrying that combination of styles. With no references or established pipelines to research, we had to create our own way of doing things. We worked hard, tried and failed many times, and had to plough through challenges such as finance, art, machines, lack of experience and more. We are proud of the look we have designed and the story we have written - a story about love, confidence, growing and blooming.)

We would like to appeal to everyone to give us a hand, and walk with us in the final lap of our adventure as we work on the music and post-production to make the film as best we can.

Synopsis

A shy fiddler named Niki meets a lovely moon-spirit and her strange musical band. Amazed and attracted, he sums up the courage and attempts to impress her. But lo’ the nervousness, a note shrieks into the air and pierces the night. Niki despairs as the moon-spirit leaves, disappointed. But as she walks away, a violin hum pulls at her heart and she decides to take a hopeful chance.
An age-old story of music, romance and epic transformation, Stick and Balloon presents a new twist with the marriage of stop-motion and traditional paper animation techniques.
The film is directed, animated and designed by Sara Chong and Chen Yanyun, a pair as complementary as a little red balloon and a long hardy stick.
With the help of "Mary & Max" VFX Supervisor Michael Allen, fiddler Marjolaine Parot, composer Jachin Pousson and the beautiful tunes of klezmer and fiddle music by Alicia Svigal, Trad'ouir, Danilo and Svetozar Milosavljevic, MoonChild weaves together a spirit of sound, sights and heart, which we hope you’ll enjoy.

I am very proud to present: Scratch & Sniff! A poetry book by Peter van de Kamp, edited by Lim Lee Ching and foreword by Jeremy Fernando, with illustrations by Sara Chong and myself. Published by Atropos.

I did the layout for the book as well, and not being trained in graphic design or book design, it was a bit of a struggle and fast paced learning-on-the-job experience. I had a lot of fun, made a ton of mistakes, got closer to typography, learnt more about printing and publishing, and opened myself to a new world of design outside animation. A great project to be part of, a big thank you to the writers for including me in the experience! :D Many thanks to Meng Wong who gave me a quick lesson on typography and his generous supply of typography books. And Chris Toh for his advice on the book cover. And Robert Bringhurst for his "The Elements of Typographic Style" bible.

Earlier this year, Stick and Balloon pitched a few ideas for the inside store display for the new Marina Bay Louis Vuitton Boutique to be launched in 2011. It is a big project, and we are given lots of creative freedom with fixed dimensions. Despite not winning the pitch, we came up with some really cool stuff for them. With their permission, I get to share with you on my blog! Woosh!

What you see here are some of the concept drawings for a stop-motion + 2d animated film. The characters are Mitch and Charlie making their own adventures around a Louis Vuitton world. We were also intending to feature the Huber craft, created by the Vuitton brothers.

As you can tell, I really dig salamanders.

This marquette for Mitch is made by Balloon, and painted by Stick.

Attended and completed the Puppets for Film and Animation at Kid Trejtnar Puppets in Prague workshop over August 2009. We got to play with the puppets at Hafan Studio, famous for their stop motion film "One Night One City". Here's the little clip we did as a group of 8 from all over the world.

My contribution is the animation of the Man with the hand (on the right) from 00:27 - 00:31 and 00:34 to 00:37
